The Chillicothe Jaycees is a volunteer organization serving the residents of Chillicothe, Ohio and its
surrounding areas. The Jaycees offer a full range of projects that provide opportunities for personal and
professional development. Membership is made up of Chillicothe
locals who volunteer their time to make Chillicothe a better place. Members plan and organize the chapter's
programming, providing each and every member the chance to meet many people and learn
important leadership skills.
What makes the Jaycees stand out from many other volunteer organizations is that we concentrate on leadership
development of the individual. One of the mottos that the Jaycees have adopted over the years is
Leadership Development through Community Service. Along with fundraising and community
volunteer work,
we also offer many other activities for our members such as social and sporting events. Our organization knows
that opportunities to meet new people and make new friends are important.
What is the Jaycees?
The Jaycees is a global service organization that was established in 1920 to serve communities around the world.
Made up of thousands of chapters, the Jaycees provides community service
through volunteer work and supports many different charities.
As a non-profit organization, the Jaycee membership is made up of men and women volunteers from 18 to 41 years of age.
Volunteers are given the opportunity to develop professional skills through community service. The Jaycees provides
members with the tools they need to build the bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development,
management skills, individual training, community service, and international connections.
Locally, the Jaycees does many things to service the community. The Chillicothe Jaycees, along with the Chillicothe
Lions Club, organize and run the Chillicothe Halloween Parade. We donate money to other organizations that provide services
to the community. Our most prestigious project is called Special Santa,
who's purpose is to provide gifts for needy children on Christmas
morning.
Individual Development
Growing as a person means taking on challenges which improve your ability to take on more
responsibilities. Being part of
the Chillicothe Jaycees is a good way to exercise your personal growth. Our organization is actively involved in many projects
in the community. These projects give our members experience and opportunities to be able to take on more challenging tasks.

Management Development
The Jaycees organization strongly emphasizes the development of management skills. Members are encouraged to get involved
in the community and take a leadership position rather than a passive one. Members of the Jaycees learn the importance of
active communications skills, personal development, and networking with others. The professional development skills learned
in the Jaycees organization help it's members in many aspects of life.

Community Development
The Chillicothe Jaycees are strongly dedicated to promoting and improving the quality of life for everyone in our community.
The Chillicothe Jaycees raise thousands of dollars in money and donations specifically targeted to many different organizations
and people in our community. In addition, the Chillicothe Jaycees perform thousands of hours of volunteer work per year to
enhance the resources and facilities available to the public. The Chillicothe, Ohio chapter also provides awareness about community
issues and events.

Chillicothe Jaycee History
The Chillicothe Jaycees originated early in 1934 when a group of Columbus Jaycees met with a handful of civic-minded
young men in the Rose Room of the Highlands Restaurant in Chillicothe. The chapter was drafted in April 1934 with 24
chapter members and Robert Barnhart serving as our first president.
It was with long hours of hard work that the Chillicothe Jaycees grew to a place of merit within the community, in
spite of strong opposition. The Jaycees were soon given the name of
"Empire Builders," as nothing stopped them from any
project deemed necessary.
A tree-planting program, new fire department, police radio
equipment, city-owned water works, a sewage disposal plant, street
signs, a city manager form of government, were some of the major
projects of the early Chillicothe Jaycees.
In 1955, a Jaycee had the dream of a place convenient to
Chillicothe where an average golfer could play the maximum amount of
golf on a course with a minimum amount of frills, resulting in
minimum cost. He so impressed the rest of the Jaycees with his
enthusiasm that they decided to support the building and operation of
a public golf course. Mary Townsend, a longtime friend of the Jaycees
donated a one hundred acre farm she lived on in Pleasant Valley to
the Jaycees, citizens and businesses of Chillicothe. This became the
Jaycees Public Golf Course which was at the time, the
"only" Jaycee conceived, built, owned, and operated golf
course in the world.
In 1972, the Jaycee clubhouse was built, and is the current sight
of Jaycee meetings, the first and third Wednesday of each month.
Visiting Jaycees from other chapters will attest to the fact that the
Jaycee clubhouse is on of the finest in the state.
In 1983, the Jaycees completed an expansion of the golf course to
18-holes, and upon opening in 1984, the Jaycee Golf Course was one of
the only 18-hole public courses in the area. Every year, more
improvements are made to the course to continue the offer a superior
golf course at a reasonable price.
In the 80's, women were admitted into the Jaycees. Also, the age
range was expanded to encompass a wider group -- the ages between 21
and 40 are now admitted.
Currently, the Jaycees perform an overwhelming number of
community-service and fund raising projects. The Youth Leadership
Scholarship Award, the Halloween Parade, Special Santa, the Bike
Races, Safety Town, Citizen of the Year, and Kettle Newsies are just
a few of the Jaycees projects.
From this brief history, you can see why the Chillicothe Jaycees
have been called the "Empire Builders." Jaycees are supreme
optimist - any project the Jaycees undertake will be a success, and
no project ever fails. While specific goals of a project may not be
attained, the members learn valuable organizational, speaking,
accounting, and leadership skills. Thus, a project serves a member, strengthening
his skills and abilities to better serve our chapter and the
community.
The Chillicothe Jaycees truly are trying to make Chillicothe a
better place in which to live.
